    Healthy Mouth Equals a Healthy Body Jan. 15, 2013, 7 a.m.

Dr. Karl A. Smith, Periodontist: Healthy Mouth Equals Healthy Body

Do you have bleeding gums, a sore mouth, loose teeth or bad breath? If so, you may be among the majority of Americans who have gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. And if you have it, you should take it seriously – by making an appointment with a Dr. Karl A. Smith today -- not just because of the problems it can cause in your mouth, but because it may increase your risk of developing a range of full-body diseases, from heart disease to cancer.

The Connection Between Mouth and Body
Just like bacteria which invade the body through a cut or other break in the skin, germs can gain access to the bloodstream when they get far enough under the gums.  Periodontal disease causes pockets between the teeth and the gums, which are ideal breeding ground for some nasty bacteria. And, unlike external bacteria that invade through obvious routes and cause obvious infection and swelling, periodontal bacteria are silent invaders from within, traveling from the mouth to all the crucial organs of the body undetected until they cause or contribute to a number of deadly diseases.  There may be few symptoms and no pain, until your gums start to bleed and your teeth loosen and actually fall out.

    Periodontal Linked Diseases

Periodontal disease is linked to diabetes, as both a cause and exacerbating factor.  Studies have shown that treating periodontal disease can improve blood sugar, and just going in for regular cleanings improves diabetic control. There is also a strong association between periodontal disease and low birth weight babies.   Studies have found periodontal bacteria in amniotic fluid.   When bacteria get into the mouth and travel to the bloodstream they elevate prostaglandins, the same inflammatory markers that stimulate uterine contractions, causing early labor.   Since pregnant women are more likely to get gingivitis because of elevated hormone levels, it’s crucial that they pay attention to dental care. Periodontal disease can be a factor in lung disease as well.  Bedridden elderly patients who don’t or can’t take good care of their teeth can breathe in bacteria which can cause pneumonia. People with COPD need to be especially careful to avoid periodontal disease since their lungs have a reduced capacity to fight off infection.

    Dentists with Super Powers

A periodontist, is a dentist who specialize in the treatment and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease. They are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria as they receive extensive training in these areas during their three additional years of education beyond dental school, and within continuing education throughout their careers. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures, and dental implants.

How to Get a Healthy Mouth and Body

Fortunately, remedying gum disease may help lower these overall health risks. When an inflammatory condition is suspected or diagnosed, it is important to quickly consult with a Periodontist, as sometimes the only way to detect periodontal diseases is through a periodontal evaluation. A periodontal evaluation is especially important if you:

    • Have a high risk for periodontal diseases.
    • Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis, or are thinking of becoming pregnant.
    • Have a family member with periodontal disease. Research suggests that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can pass through saliva. This means the common contact of saliva in families puts children and couples at risk for contracting the periodontal disease of another family member.
    • Have a sore or irritation in your mouth that does not get better within two weeks.

Take control of your preventative dental health. Make an appointment for a periodontal evaluation with

Dr. Karl A. Smith today. Taking care of your teeth and gums will not only help enhance your smile, but will help you maintain your overall health.  To make an appointment in our Waldorf office – call 301-638-4867 today!

12 years later and moved across several states but still had friends and relatives still here in DC- I decided to come back to see Dr. Smith to have his office clean my teeth and check out my implants. He has new technology now and took a free scan to see my implants. PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT. I am so very glad I chose him 12 years ago and will continue to choose him again and again even though I now live over 250 miles away. It was nice to see a lot of the same people in the office and it was remodeled.

I wrote this review on 3/20/18 at 9:20AM and I got an email on 10/17 that there was a reply to my original review. The reply was "please remove." I got around to replying today but the review was removed. Moreover, I could not remember my password and the password reset on this site doesn't work. My original review doesn't fit on here anymore. They will try to up-sell services you don't need and he gets mad and will literally kick you out of his office if you challenge him without even a cursory attempt to understand your point of view. My full review can be found around the internet if you search for "Karl Smith Rude and Uncaring." In essence, you cannot trust reviews on this site if someone like this monster pretending to be a dentist can simply just say "please remove" to reviews he doesn't like. There was no comment about my claims, and a simple "please remove" is all it took. Look on yelp and you'll find that this man is not fit to be in the healthcare business, or any business for that matter. His staff is professional and friendly and keep a tidy office. Too bad that is all for naught. I wonder how long this review will be on here. Not long is my guess.

We are so sorry that you got a remove email. Please know that we don't handle all of our marketing in-house and sometimes these things happen without our knowledge. I take full responsibility for that. Since this is the first time I am seeing this review, first and foremost, we are very sad that you had a less than positive experience with Dr. Smith. We do recall your appointment and remember all the challenges we had in regards to getting the correct data from your dentist. That is a very frustrating experience for you and for us. No excuses, it is never our intent for any person to have a less than positive experience and for that we (all of us) wholeheartedly say we are sorry and are willing to do whatever we can to make things right. I know you see differently but Dr. Smith is a very kind man who takes very good care of us, his team, our families, and our children. He has paid for education expenses for team members and their kids, supported their families when looking for work after lay-offs, supported and paid for US citizenship, and fully supports us at every turn as working women in this sometimes wild and crazy world. You only get one chance to make a good first impression and I am so sorry you were less than impressed. If there is anything I can do to help, please feel free to reach out to me personally. Your review affects all of us and most importantly is not the reflection we want to give you of us or Dr. Smith. Thank you so much ~ Beverly 703-894-4867

I had gum grafts with Dr. Smith and an implant for my front tooth. First I had the implant and that is not done yet because I don't have the tooth but the putting in of the implant and a bone graft and taking out the tooth was perfect and pain-free. I cracked the front tooth so I have to wear a fake tooth in the front and it is nice and real looking. The gum grafts had to be done on the teeth next to the implant tooth and the way they look is natural. I could not be more pleased. Dr. Smith was my fourth opinion, yes I am picky but he did a great job and workers are great too. Everyone was so nice and friendly.

I cannot recommend this office more. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful - starting from front desk (Rose), through the staff (Kate and Beverly) and of course Dr. Smith himself. Dr. Smith is great at what he does. He is also very easy going and made me smile really quickly. He really made me feel relaxed and well taken care of. There wasn't a single question or concern on my part, left without an answer and thorough explanation. The whole atmosphere in the office is very relaxing and basically makes you feel "at home". Yeah, I know - very unusual for a dentist/periodontal office, but that's how I felt. I have had quite some work done on my teeth over the years, and have visited different dental offices. This was my first visit with a periodontist and I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend Dr. Smith and his staff to everyone who needs an expert doctor and outstanding customer experience. This office really stands out! Highly recommended!

About Front Desk: Rose helped me schedule my appointment. She was also the one who followed up with me prior to my visit. She was extremely professional and friendly. My wait time was only a few minutes, but I was still offered something to drink (I felt pampered). Beverly (the office manager), was awesome. I could tell she really knew her job very well. She spent quite some time with me, diligently explaining the treatment, dr. Smith recommended, explaining my financial options, insurance coverage, etc. I never felt rushed or pushed into anything. I felt this office works very smoothly. Basically by the time my X-rays and complete oral exam were done - Beverly had already contacted my insurance provider in regards to coverage, and had everything laid out for me. She was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel (once again), that " I was in good hands".

I have need to move ahead with dental implant surgery for two years. I am in Virginia for the summer and my family was told that DDS Karl Smith's office was the place to go for perio work. My daughter went first and came back glowing. My first contact with his office was with his helpful staff member Beverly Wilburn, who patiently worked with me on email about my needs. All emails were answered ASAP as window of being here to do work was closing. DDS Smith even went above and beyond to review my work needed even before an in office appointment was booked. After two years of trying to find the right office to do the implants, in one visit filled with obvious expertise, handholding by an amazing front desk staff, and their ability to make this all happen within a two day time frame, a 5 star rating is not enough. The staff made me feel welcomed, comfortable, and built confidence for a process that I had resisted for two years. The lst stage with bone grafting has gone without a single problem, the promise of no memories of the work came true, and I know I am in the hands of a very experienced master of his craft. The proof on my part, I will now fly across the country two more times next year to finish the work and will be happy.

About Front Desk: Front Desk Staff are 5 stars. People have gone above and beyond on the phone and in person to help me with scheduling, information, and forms. On the phone, in person, on facebook they are the best!!!!!!!!!!!

About Hygienist: 5 star treatment and I learned some new things about taking care of my mouth.
