It is considered active therapy, as opposed to being preventive in nature.

Connective tissue is typically harvested from the palate of the donor, by making two closely spaced incisions and removing the tissue between them. That tissue is typically used to cover exposed tooth roots, preventing sensitivity and caries; and increasing the zone of keratinized tissue to resist food abrasion and toothbrushing forces over time.
