It was time to take the plunge. I had to undergo a full reconstructive surgery to begin with and was recommended to go see Dr. Stephen Bowne in Manhattan from a trusted friend. Boy, were they right. Quality over Quantity - worth every penny. If you are looking for a kind, confident expert w/ state-of-the-art tech, an in-house cosmetic dental lab, and impeccable staff –THIS IS YOUR GUY. I must admit, after searching google I was skeptical because of a review on YELP I found mentioning a DR BOWNE horror story. Never fear, Google was here. Two forum searches one call later, I alas found the truth. I learned that this "review" was actually crafted by an account (with no credibility mind you - shame on yelp) set up to bash on a Dr. Stephen BOWEN, based out of upstate New York, not Stephen Bowne, DMD of Manhattan, NY. Did I mention Dr. Bowne does all of his implant, veneer, root canal, and cap procedure grafting himself. No trainees, interns, or pseudo experts. I became fascinated to learn that Bowne studied under a dental leader in 1800 and is now the sole owner of NYC's oldest dental practice – complete with all of the pomp, circumstance, and celebrity clientele. It is on Madison Ave after all! 5 stars all around.

All I can say is that Dr. Bowne is a dentist that needs to be avoided at all costs. He performed unnecessary and expensive procedures on me which he never informed about before doing them. This doctor told me that I needed to have all of my old metal fillings replaced with the white fillings. It sounded ok to me, even though I have not had any problems with my teeth. I asked him if white fillings cost more than any other type of filling and he said no. I came back to his office and without xraying my teeth beforehand, "Dr." Bowne proceeded to yank out fillings in two of my molars. He then sanded down my teeth for the porcelain onlay he was fitting me for. He never told me that I was going to be receiving onlays, which is considered a cosmetic procedure and to which i would have never consented. First of all I grind my teeth - which should have been apparent to him had he ever actually examined my teeth beforehand - and it is not covered by insurance. I was dumbfounded but left the office to wait for my onlays to come back from the lab. Once I was home I started having severe pain in my jaw. I went back to Dr. Bowne and he told me my teeth were cracked and that I now needed two root canals. Two root canals for teeth that were previously fine! Plus, he left so little of the original tooth structure that I now really don't have much in the way of molars in that area. I asked Dr. Bowne why he performed this unnecessary procedure on me and he just turned and walked out of the room. Then I receive a bill from his office for $2,400 for the onlays. My insurance of course would not cover it as it is a cosmetic procedure. I called the office and asked for a copy of my records because I wanted to send them to an attorney, and magically they could not locate them anywhere. This man is a charlatan who only cares about making a quick buck. After all, he has a high rent to pay for a fancy 5th avenue office, and of course he has to keep himself in the latest Ferragamos. Stay away.

I came to Dr. Bowne for a general checkup and was told I needed all of my fillings replaced. As I was leaving the office, Dr. Bowne casually asked me if using a 'white material' was ok with me. I said sure - as long as it was covered by insurance. He said it was. When I came back for my appointment he proceeded to drill down my two back molars for what I eventually learned were to be fitted with custom porcelian onlays. He never got my consent for this cosmetic procedure, never took xrays and had to use such force pulling out my silver fillings (which according to him were about to fall out anyway) that he severely cracked both of my teeth. Then he sent me home to wait for the onlays. I was confused because he never explained what it was he was doing to my teeth. I was also in excruciating pain. I went back to him and he sent me to a endodontist for two root canals. I also received a bill in the mail for $2,400, none of which was covered by insurance. This man - I can't call him a real doctor - is incompetent, a total rip off artist and only cares about one thing. Money. Oh, and of course his impeccable Gucci loafers. An astounding display of incompetence and avarice. Save your teeth and your money and don't go.

I came in as a new patient for a dental check up and was told that I needed to have all of my fillings replaced because they were old. He told me that he'd like to replace the fillings with a new white material. I asked him if this was covered by insurance and he told me it was. I came back to have my lower two molar fillings replaced first, and he proceeded - without taking any xrays - to very forcibly yank out my fillings. He then drilled down my molars to fit me for porcelain onlays. I had NO idea what he was doing and he never asked for my consent for this procedure. I would have said no since it was a.) cosmetic and not covered by insurance and b.) I grind my teeth so the onlays would have lasted about a year, max. I was confused about what was going on and was just sent home to wait for the onlays to be ready. Once I got home I suffered severe pain in my jaw and headaches. I came back to the office and was promptly sent to an endodontist, who told met that when Dr. Bowne pulled out my fillings he cracked both of my molars so severely that I now needed two root canals. I had the root canals done, but was left with no real tooth structure. I still suffer from headaches and my jaw hurts most of the time.

For some things, he is absolutely phenomenal. He does gold fillings to perfection and without pain. Other dentists "Ooh and ahh" with admiration over a gold filling he gave me. He can fix a chip in a front tooth so that no one will ever be able to tell it was ever chipped. And he does this only by filling in the gap--not even by covering the whole tooth. I only had one less than perfect experience with him, and who knows, maybe the same thing would have happened with any dentist. He put a porcelain onlay on one of my molars, and it ended up hurting for years and still does when I chew on it a certain way. And the same thing happened to the friend of mine who sent me to him in the first place. And the only other criticizm I have is that he's not the greatest about returning phone calls. But other than that he's extremely nice and charming, extremely patient and lets you come back as many times as you need to if you need more adjustments to a filling (for free)--until it feels just right. The facilities are nice and his staff is nice. Here's a tip: bring a sweater. He likes the room cold.

A very skilled dentist. He can diagnose a problem and fix it quickly. But on the negative side, he seems rushed and doesn't really listen to the patient. There are sometimes other factors he should know about. I had problems with the most recent repair work on my teeth. It wasn't because he couldn't handle it. It was because he didn't listen and went ahead and did a procedure he should not have done. I am looking for a new dentist.

Very pleasant, laid back. Came highly recommended by an academic dentist that I respect. He had to correct work done by another dentist and save several teeth that were in various states of erosion. I wish it cost less, but the work was great.
