Dr. Hoopes had his assistant only clean my teeth, without polishing them. He told me that since I had not received a professional cleaning from a US dentist in 18 months - that I had "hidden plaque" under my teeth which would cause them to fall out.
Being a graduate student and relatively underfunded at the time, I did not return to any dentist for 1 year. When I visited a different dentist in Orange County and got my teeth cleaned - the dentist did it in 20 minutes, without any pain, and mentioned nothing about a "hidden plaque attack". I found the Hoopes sales technique to be manipulative and insensitive, and they did not follow up to see about additional cleaning for me.
