My husband had an appointment to have 4 teeth extracted (2 impacted/2 not). We requested a Pre-Treatment Authorization to be done to see what our out of pocket was. Mind you, the office is IN NETWORK on our PPO. When we called to make sure that the services would be performed under general, we were then told that it was approved for local. We called the office and they stated that they needed to check with the insurance company and I never received a call back. When I called them back, they had spoken to the insurance company and STILL gave us WRONG information. I called the insurance company myself and the anesthesia WAS COVERED. My husband was never asked if he wanted local or general anesthesia and then the office was resistant to acommodating my husband who has anxiety. He has never had oral surgery and doesn't know what to ask and what not to. Bottom line, we cancelled the appointment, will be sending a letter to the ADA and our insurance company for investigation. This is on top of them pressuring him to buy some electric toothbrush and telling him that his teeth would fall out if he didn't buy it. He didn't buy it and I question the ethics of this office. Typically, it is the subscriber's responsibility to confirm their coverage with the carrier. In case of a pre-determination, an insurance company will usually send a copy of the pre-determination letter to the patient. If a particular procedure is not listed in the EOB - it was not submitted for approval.
