I would recommend Dr. R. Peter Griffith.
I went in as an emergency. On a weekend in 2005, I broke a tooth (2nd bicuspid), in half, actually more than half of it disintegrated, while I was visiting family in CA. My nephew recommended either Dr Peter Griffith or his partner, Dr Paul Griffith. I called on Monday and Dr Peter Griffith saw me the next day. He said he could fix my tooth with a crown (I feared it would be much worse, I have had a root canal in the past for a crown on another tooth). I found him to be extremely pleasant, gentle (hardly any pain), careful, very knowledgeable (I had a ton of questions since I had searched the web about my broken tooth) and capable. I would definitely recommend him. I am not sure how his cost compares to other Bay area dentists. From my East Coast experiences I found it to be about average to a little high.
