Yes, when done unconsciously these are just different names for the same problem. Bruxism is the habit, usually unconscious, of grinding and/or clenching of the teeth while sleeping or awake. Many individuals who brux are not aware that they have the habit of grinding and clenching so they do not seek help or protection for the condition. Sometimes while sleeping the grinding can be loud enough to wake a sleeping partner and in so doing bring attention to the problem for the first time. Tooth damage and discomfort may become quite advanced before a sufferer becomes aware that they have the brux habit. Excessive grinding/clenching of the teeth can be extremely damaging. Failure of dental restorations, temperature sensitivity, breakage of teeth and gum recession are just some of the common problems associated with the clenching grinding habit known as bruxism. Jaw joint and muscle pain can also occur and in extreme cases lead to TMJ/TMD (temporal mandibular disorder). What causes bruxism? The cause of bruxism remains unclear. Sleep disorders involving disrupted sleep patterns, mis-aligned tee
