I went in for a check up and recall exam. I found the office clean, updated and modern. The staff was pleasant and courteous and seemed happy working there. The office manager went out of her way to straighten out my insurance for me. Dr. Malen, after careful review of my xrays and complete charting set up a treatment plan for me. He accepted my insurance as either payment in full or worked with the plan and I had a copay. At the end of the treamtne I was satisfied, comfortable and would recommend him and his office to my friends.,

His office made me wait 3 hours while they chatted and enjoyed lunch. Then told me they only had 5 minutes to spend on my cleaning and only 15 minutes on my exam. They never actually cleaned my teeth and just ran a manual brush over them and charged my insurance full cost. Then the exam was a joke...they used some cheap handheld xray tool and the xrays came out dark charcoal grey. I had pain in my mouth and Dr. Malen said all looked OK. I went to another dentist right after where he found 3 cavities (by using a real xray maching) where I had the pain and also told me my teeth hadn't been cleaned in a long time. He confirmed I did not recently receive a professional cleaning. Then Dr. Malen had the nerve to fraudulently bill my insurance company for fillings and other services supposedly done a couple of months later when I never saw him again. I've filed a complaint against him with the Board of Dentistry but I got notice that he already "retired" and will "no longer be practicing" but he'll be overseeing the other dentists' work. Seems the Board of Dentistry may have already caught up with him. Hopefully so. They also ignored my requests for my dental records and my new dentist had a hard time getting them too.

Went to Malen for routine checkup. Several people were scheduled simultaneously, so we waited well over an hour. The staff had no idea how to transfer records from a prior dentist and was rude to the staff of our old dentist. The hygenist polished our teeth -- but didn't clean them -- no ultrasonic machine, no floss, no picks! However, she did insist that Xrays have to be taken every 6 months even for patients who haven't had cavities in decades, and then took more xrays than any dentist has every taken -- 8 different views. The dentist picked a little bit, but didn't use the ultrasonic machine. He then wanted to do a filling -- even though he couldn't find any indication of a cavity on the xrays. An unnecessary xray. The most inadequate cleaning I've ever had. And a filling I'm not convinced was even called for.

We gave Dr.Malen and his staff a few chances but will definitely not be going back. The dental assistant were always very rough during the cleaning and my husband and I agree that Dr Malen pays more attention to our Dental insurance than to the patient. We've sat in his office and it's the same old thing - he goes through his computer brings up the insurance and speaks about it more than he speaks about the health of our teeth. Also, our insurance has always paid. Find someone that actually takes care of his patients needs.

I had a terrible experience with this dentist. He often asks you questions while working on your teeth, including while you have instruments in your mouth, he is quite clumsy and dropped instruments on my face several times, and, besides a check-up, the one thing he had to do for me was put in a crown after a root canal- the crown he put in was far too small, so now there is a big gap between that tooth and the one next to it, causing big chunks of food to constantly get lodged there. I have gone to another dentist to fix this; it's going to cost me over $500 to repair what this dentist has done.

Modern/computerized x-ray equipment is cool and fancy, but Dr. Malen tends to rush through his procedures in a sloppy manner. He is often careless, without apologizing. For example, when numb during a proceudre, his hand slipped and the drill cut my face. As I didn't feel anything, I had no idea. He said nothing, and it was only after the procedure and I went to wash up in the bathroom, did I find a large scratch on my face. On another occassion, when putting in a temporary crown, it had a jagged edge. I didn't feel this until the novocaine wore off and it kept cutting into my lip. The final crown experience was also rushed as he had no time to adjust my bite. As a result, I had to return to have this taken care of.

Dr.Malen is nice and friendly but the office does not do a very thorough job. They polish your teeth but don't do any scraping.
